Complete Midwifery Care
Our team provides midwifery care that includes prenatal visits, planning for and attending your birth at home or a birth center, and postpartum care.
Prenatal Care
In our holistic prenatal visits, we honor pregnancy as a natural, transformative process. Appointments are unhurried, personal, and centered on your body, your baby, and your evolving needs. Our care nurtures your physical health, emotional well-being, and confidence through education, partnership, and evidence-based guidance.
Each visit includes whole-person support through conversation, clinical assessment, and individualized recommendations. We check in about symptoms, physical changes, nutrition, movement, sleep, and any concerns you’d like to explore. Emotional well-being is integral to our care, and we provide space to reflect on how you’re feeling while honoring your intuition and lived experience.
We monitor your health and your baby’s development at every visit through assessments such as blood pressure, pulse, weight (if desired), fetal heart tones, and baby’s position and growth—always explained beforehand and done with full consent. Education is tailored to your stage of pregnancy and includes fetal development, normal body changes, red flags, nutrition, exercise, and preparation for birth and postpartum. When discussing labs, screenings, and testing options, we support full informed choice by reviewing benefits, risks, alternatives, and the meaning of potential results.
Holistic support may include guidance on nutrition, hydration, herbs or supplements (if desired), bodywork, emotional support strategies, and lifestyle practices to enhance comfort and wellness. Throughout your care, we practice shared decision-making: you remain the primary decision-maker, and we offer expertise and steady support to help you create a plan aligned with your values and goals. Prenatal care in our practice is a partnership—rooted in trust, respect, and a deep belief in your ability to grow and birth your baby with knowledge, confidence, and individualized support.
Prenatal Care Timeline
- Once a month from the start of care until 28 weeks
- Every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks
- One Home visit between 36 and 37 weeks where we organize all of your birth supplies
- Weekly visits from 37 and 42 weeks
- Additional appointments as needed
Labs and Ultrasounds
- All bloodwork can be performed during your prenatal visit. There is no need to go to a lab draw center to have your labs performed. We strive to make you as comfortable as possible for the procedure and can accommodate you however you need.
- We do not perform ultrasounds in our office, but we can refer you to trusted providers to ensure you receive the care you need.
- We also connect you with trusted holistic and integrative practitioners for additional support in many other areas.
Labor and Birth
During your labor and birth, you will be attended by a combination of the birth team members. We will attend you during active labor, throughout your birthing process, and for several hours in the immediate postpartum. Our team is there to support your birth, the way you want it, in a safe and gentle manner. We provide you with encouragement, guidance, reassurance, and respect. Still, we are highly trained and ready to jump into action if a complication does arise. We bring all the normal equipment you would find in a labor and delivery room in a hospital, including oxygen, resuscitation equipment, anti-hemorrhagic drugs, IV fluids and supplies. We also carry herbs, homeopathic remedies, and a wealth of hands-off recommendations we can provide to aid you in your laboring. Home birth does not have to be messy or complicated – your midwife team will help instruct you on how to prepare your bed, floors, and home so your midwives can quickly clean up after the birth and tuck you into your bed.
Water Births
Many of our clients wish to have water births. Water serves as a natural relief of the discomforts of labor and has been affectionately coined the “aqua-dural”. Our team has several birth tub options that are provided with your care, and we provide you with a list of the few other items that are required for a water birth. We instruct you on how to quickly set up the tub and get it full, and we will help break it down soon after birth as well. Whether or not you actually give birth in the tub – and you definitely can! – it is often a great tool for comfort during labor and providing you some relaxation through the buoyancy and warmth of the water.
VBAC
We are honored to support VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), or more specifically an HBAC (Home Birth After Cesarean) client. We do not take this lightly as more often than not, a client seeking an HBAC has had some type of trauma surrounding her previous cesarean and it is always a priority to keep clients physically and emotionally safe. It is important that clients are informed and empowered about their decision to birth out of the hospital. Your midwifery team is here to support you in navigating your decisions around VBAC and can provide any resources you might be seeking.
Birth Center Births
We also plan and attend births at A Family Affair Birth Center in Poway. This beautiful facility offers a warm, home-like environment where you will have a private room for giving birth. You get to make yourself comfortable and labor and birth however you like. The birth center has large built in tubs and balconies. You can find more about the birth center at www.AFamilyAffairBirthCenter.com
Postpartum Care
In our holistic postpartum visits, we honor the early weeks after birth as a time of healing, bonding, and profound transition. Our care focuses on supporting your physical recovery, emotional well-being, and feeding journey through education, skilled guidance, and individualized support.
For your health, we monitor vitals, bleeding, and overall recovery, support breastfeeding or babyfeeding, and offer personalized recommendations for your questions and concerns. Because postpartum healing requires rest and nourishment, we provide practical guidance on staying well-fed, hydrated, and rested. We also offer compassionate space to process your birth experience and provide referrals to outside providers—such as bodywork, mental health therapy, physical/occupational therapy, or OB care—when helpful.
For your baby, we assess vitals, weight changes, feeding, elimination, sleep, and overall adjustment to life outside the womb. We assist with latch and feeding positions and offer the same newborn screenings available in the hospital, including the California Newborn Screening Program, CCHD screening, and Newborn Hearing Screening. Midwives provide newborn care for the first 6 weeks, and we recommend establishing pediatric care in the early weeks as well.
Postpartum visits take place in your home at 24–36 hours and 3 days postpartum, virtually at 1 week, and in our office at 2 and 6 weeks, with flexibility for more frequent support if needed. As you move through the postpartum period, we continue to monitor your physical recovery, emotional well-being, and feeding progress; at your final visit, we can also offer a Pap smear and any desired bloodwork.
Postpartum care is a partnership—rooted in trust, gentleness, and a deep belief in your ability to heal, adapt, and thrive as you care for your newborn.
